Book Review: A British Girl's Guide to Hurricanes and Heartbreak by Laura Taylor Namey

Sometimes, you have to be a hurricane.

A British Girl's Guide to Hurricanes and Heartbreak follows Flora, as she runs from her life in Winchester to go meet with some family-friends in Miami.

After her mother passes away, which Flora misses, Flora has walled herself off her family and her closest friend. In the midst of the grief, she is trying to figure out what she wants to study and who she even wants to be.

After leaving for Miami on a whim with only a suitcase and her camera, Flora stays at the house of her brother's girlfriend, Lila, where they welcome her with open arms. While there, she helps Lila's sister plan for her wedding that Lila and her brother will be flying to Miami for in a few weeks.

They attend an art fair where Flora finds a nature photo that speaks to her heart and she decides to find the artist at his local studio to ask him about his process. While there, she is mistaken for a model and is soon found out by the photographer's son, who's photo is the one she bought. After another interaction at the studio, her and Baz make a deal. She will pretend to be his girlfriend for a family gala and he will step in to take the wedding photos.

Flora also begins to learn photography techniques from Baz, as well as finding herself entangled in a friendship and relationship when Gordan shows up in Miami. As the friends work through their feelings, they pose for Baz and his friend's photoshoot and start to realize they may be more connected than they thought.

As Hurricane Jessica moves closer to Miami, Flora starts to realize what is important to her and who she wishes was by her side.

This book was a really fun journey of seeing how Flora learns to deal with her grief, and how being the family hurricane might not be a bad thing. I also really liked that the when the weather was mentioned or talked about it was pretty accurate, which I do love as a meteorologist. Flora is a character who grew on me throughout the story, but the first version of her is definitely rough around the edges with a lot to learn. Overall, a 4 out of 5 star read for me.

This book is scheduled to be published September 26, 2023.
