After struggling through tragedy, forgiveness is possible.
A Pretty Implausible Premise by Karen Rivers is a young adult book expected to be published next month. Though it is contemporary, there is a sort of 'sci-fi' aspect to the story.
Hattie, Isabella Hatfield, is struggling to figure out how to deal with her PTSD after she was unable to save a child while working as a lifeguard. She hasn't been able to go near a pool since, giving up on her swim team and Olympic dreams.
Presley has just moved to California with his mom and sister, leaving behind Canada and the car crash that led him to no longer be able to figure skate and killed his twin brother.
Both Hattie and Presley have the ghosts of their past following them, reminding them of what they had and lost. Presley and Hattie grow closer, learning more about their histories and finding safety in each other.
Hattie also finds comfort in a book, The Shark Club, which was gifted to her during an breakdown by a woman at an airport. She finds herself rereading it constantly, taking comfort in the characters and the story. As Hattie learns more about Presley, she starts to see the pieces of him that are similar to the book. As Hattie continues to read the book, we the reader get to see part of as well.
Both stories start to have a theme of forgiveness and figuring out how to forgive yourself when something bad happens. It also shows how forgiving ourselves is the one way to move on.
I really enjoyed this book, it was cute little love story with two people who didn't quite believe in love. It was a fun read, and I liked the forgiveness within the two texts.
A 3/5 star book for me.
This book is scheduled to be published September 26,2023.
