It is totally normal to have a list of rules to help you navigate life. Right?
Wren lives her life with strict rules, about relationships and friendships and how she conducts herself. Her best friend thinks she is a control freak but Wren wants to hold onto control when she can.
That is until she witnesses a boy getting bullied about being catfished while at her local coffee shop. She finds herself jumping in, pretending to be Gemma, the girl he was talking to online.
Gemma is not like Wren, not even a little bit, but she finds herself enjoying her adventures with Asher, the boy she saved. As they grow closer, Asher ends up volunteering at the same dog shelter, and they find they have a new mission. Get Bean adopted.
Bean doesn't seem to like anyone, except Wren and Asher. So they team up to host events to get interest Bean; since neither of them can adopt him themselves. They host a puppacino eating competition and swimming race and find themselves trying desperately to find Bean a home. All while keeping their secrets to themselves. When they finally decide to come clean about their secrets Wren is relieved, until Asher has some secrets of his own. Things seem to work out fine, until they don't.
This book was really cute, even with the drama I found it an easy read that filled a fluffy hole in my heart. Bonus points for a having a dog named Bean who is an absolute legend. Additional bonus points for having a girl named Maggie, who isn't problematic. Something that seems to happen a lot when my name shows up in books.
I really enjoyed the conversations around social media within the story, especially when someone uses it frequently and that other doesn't. The cast of characters was fun, the drama felt real and overall I was happy by the end.
I did rate this a 3.5/5 stars, mostly because it was simple to read but didn't blow me away. It takes a lot of that to happen with rom-coms for me.
Though, Borrow My Heart doesn't come out until June 13, 2023. Kasie West does have many other books that fit this similar style.
