Book Review: Casket Case by Lauren Evans

Casket Case is a debut rom-com by Lauren Evans, that follows Nora as she returns to her small hometown to run her family's casket business.

Nora thought she was finished with Rabbittown, Alabama, for good. But an unexpected tragedy turned her life upside down, and she's found herself back in her tiny hometown running the family casket business.

There aren't exactly a lot of prospects for a single woman in her thirties in a place like Rabbittown. Until Nora Clanton's ordinary, casket-selling day is interrupted by a handsome stranger wandering into her shop and asking for directions--as well as a date.

Garrett Bishop seems like the ideal guy. He's thoughtful, he's kind, and he has a lucrative job as a logistics coordinator, for which he seems to have a passion. She's not totally sure what "logistics" entails, but she knows it means long hours, lots of travel, and urgent calls in the middle of the night.

When a few of Rabbittown's residents suddenly pass away--a heart attack here, a car crash there--and Garrett is spotted at the scenes of, well, all of the deaths, his frustratingly vague job description starts to become increasingly . . . suspicious. What is it that Garrett actually does for a living?

There was a lot of death in this book, which I guess I didn't expect? But also, makes a lot of sense, so that is probably on me. One thing about this book that I really liked was the concept, about Garret working for death and how he is there to make sure no one is alone when they pass. There is a twist about other people around her who have worked in this 'industry' and I found that really interesting too.

This book has a little too much 'insta-love' for me, especially since there is a lot of time the characters are fighting or don't understand each other. Garret sees Nora almost immediately and decides 'this is my girl' and I sort of wish they had more time to flesh things out instead of fighting once they were already involved. Even by the end of the story I'm not sure if they even like each other, which is something. Adding in the random other male interest for a few chapters was almost more believable to me? Either way I think this book had a really good idea, I'm just not sure how it was presented was for me.

Overall, I really liked the idea of the plot and how that would impact different people's lives, I just think I wanted more from it. This book is definitely for someone and I hope they find it.

I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars.

It comes out Sept 10, 2024!
