Book Review: Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

Two Rival Journalists. A war between Gods. Magical Typewriters.

Divine Rivals is a young adult novel by Rebecca Ross that follows two rival journalists, Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt.

Iris is trying to keep her family, and life, together, taking care of her mom while her brother is off at war. Roman Kitt is competing with Iris for a columnist position all while trying to juggle the expectations of his family.

While this is happening, Iris writes letters to her brother that she never sends, instead placing them in the wardrobe of her room. Suddenly, she starts to get responses from a stranger, who's typewriter is somehow connected to hers. The stranger builds her up, supporting her dreams and listening to her wishes.

When Iris loses her mom and the position at the newspaper, she quits, choosing to take a job reporting on the front lines to try to find her missing brother. There she meets Marisol and another correspondent, Attie. After a few weeks, Roman shows up at the B & B, after almost getting killed by bombs and Iris is furious. As the two start to work through their feelings, and secrets, they find themselves both on the front lines, trying to report while fighting for their lives.

This book did things to my emotions. It was well written, with powerful notes shared between the characters, as well as moving in how the scenes were written. I honestly very much loved this book and was distraught to learn I need to wait to December for the sequel which I definitely need now.

There was a lovely mix of fantasy and mythology with the romance and enemies to lovers vibe I love in books. The fighting between the Gods, how that is effecting the city, but also that TWIST at the end, oof. The way the mythology is worked into the text is also really nice, giving a good background on the war that is happening around the characters. I loved the background with the magical typewriters as well, and the connection those had through the family line.

Like I said, I was shocked by how much I loved this book and I'm excited to read the sequel in December.

5 out of 5 stars for me!
