Book Review: Every Time You Go Away by Abigail Johnson

A love story told over many years, with many traumas in between.

Every Time You Go Away is a contemporary young adult novel expected to come out later this year.

This story follows two friends, Rebecca and Ethan, who became fast friends as children after Ethan was dropped off at his grandparent's house, next to Rebecca's.

Their story is told in pieces of their history together, every time Ethan would come back because his mom relapsing, and when he would leave again, until now.

Ethan comes to Rebecca after his mom promises to go to rehab, again, but the Rebecca he last saw has changed. After surviving a car crash that killed her father and left her paralyzed, Rebecca is both stronger and more broken than he remembers. Even after hearing about the accident from his grandparents, he didn't know what to expect. Rebecca and Ethan reconnect, with the promise she will help him find his mother instead of talking about the issues she is struggling with.

As the summer continues, Rebecca starts to fight the idea of leaving for college at the end of it, while hoping that maybe once Ethan won't leave her again. They start to fight their feelings for each other, as well as deal with their own traumas, only to see if they can come together for longer than just a few months.

This book was heart wrenching in the same way it was a lovely story. Both Ethan and Rebecca have been through a lot, keeping secrets from each other but also us as the reader. Rebecca is trying to work out what she wants, and how she wants to approach the tension in the relationship with her mother. Ethan needs to learn how to live for himself, instead of constantly trying to save his mother from her addiction. The storylines within the story can be rough at times, so I recommend looking at a list of triggers before reading.

I really enjoyed the story overall, especially the way it ended. The story felt complete, and made a lot of sense to me. I also liked the even though the characters did struggle with communication, they learn how, and learn to trust each other throughout the story.

4 out of 5 stars for me!

This book is expected to be published Dec 5,2023.
