Book Review: Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee

When your family might lose everything, is it worth going being a millionaire's fake wedding date?

Fake Dates and Mooncakes is 2023 debut by Sher Lee. The book follows Dylan, who is working hard to keep his aunt's take-out open, while also trying to enter a mooncake baking contest that could get their name on the map.

When making a delivery for Wok Warriors, Dylan meets Adrian, who begins to yell at him about the order, until Adrian's friend Theo joins him and lets Dylan return to work, where he thinks the encounter is over...until Theo shows up at the take-out the next day.

Theo wants to apologize for his friend's behavior by trying the take-out again, which blooms into them discussing their lives...and how different they are.

Within a few days, Dylan and his aunt receive a grant for the money they need to not lose their home and the take-out, but the name of the grant seems to point to Theo.

Suddenly, Dylan finds himself agreeing to be Theo's 'fake' date to a family wedding, to make himself feel better about taking the money. As Dylan and Theo grow closer, and their feelings grow stronger the differences in their worlds seem to be too much to handle.

This book was a really cute read, I enjoyed Dylan and Theo's relationship, and the adorable dog Clover. I liked how their differences ended up being strengthens, even when the odds felt against them. A lot of the struggles also seem to be internal for Dylan, and I liked being able to watch him figure those out.

Another thing about this book I really enjoyed was the Singaporean culture and foods, and the way they were explained to the audience. I liked how it felt like I was apart of the important traditions and how much I learned from having the author add these traditions in. There is even discussion about how the traditions change depending on the location and how those changes impact the different groups.

Overall, this book was a 4/5 star read for me. It was adorable, had a lot of moments that let me learn, and overall was a heart-warming story.

Fake Dates and Mooncakes is expected to be published May 16,2023
