When trying to outrun the ghosts of your past, its probably ill-advised to befriend a ghost
hunter.
Ghosted: A Northanger Abbey Novel by Amanda Quain follows Hattie Tilney, a senior at the private school her mother is the headmistress of. A school that is known for being haunted and starred as the backdrop for a thriller film.
Hattie just wants to make it through her senior year, get into college and leave the thoughts of her father's death and expectations of her mother behind.
Then enters Kit Morland, a transfer student on scholarship from a ghost hunting organization, who is obsessed with ghosts and the history of the school. Finding it much more interesting then his life in Florida.
When Hattie's mom assigns Hattie to be his official ambassador for the school, Hattie is confused and unwelcoming to the new distraction from her goals. As her and Kit grow closer, she begins to realize that Kit is opening her eyes to the part of her she has hidden away from everyone else. Kit brings out the pieces of her she had tried to bury, and in the process brings some drama between Hattie and her friends and mother.
Overall, I think one of the things this book deals with well is grief, and how everyone handles grief differently. Between Hattie, her siblings and her mother, there are many different responses and reactions that have been impacting them since her father had passed. Hattie believes her mother cares more about work, Freddie, her sister, has fallen into being a 'disappointment' and her younger brother Liam is just trying to make sense of everything going on around him.
All the characters had great arcs throughout the story, due to them coming together in their grief and figuring it out. Hattie makes some decisions that effect her relationships, and have to fix them. Kit thinks he's doing the right thing trying to help her, but sends things into a spiral. There is a lot of change that happens as the story goes and I really enjoyed it.
As for ghosts, you'll have to decide for yourself who's team your on about if they exist of not but I enjoyed the underlying paranormal in a 'normal' world.
A 4 out of 5 star read for me, that I'm excited to keep talking about prior to it's release.
Ghosted is expected to be published July 25, 2023. So be sure to pre-order from your favorite indie!
