Which happy-ending will you take?
Going Bicoastal is a YA romcom novel with the vibes of 'Sliding Doors'.
Natalya has a choice to make, stay in NYC for the summer and maybe get a chance with 'redhead' or go reconnect with her mom in LA.
She has 24 hours to make this decision, but we don't have to suffer. The story follows two alternative timelines, one showing Tal as she continues to live in NYC and another where she is in LA.
In NYC, she finally learns who the mysterious 'redhead' she has been crushing on is. A punk-rock daughter of musicians named Elly. They find themselves more tangled together than they could image and begin their summer romance in the city.
In LA, Tal is a 'nepotism' hire at her mom's work, where she is a paired with Adam Rose, a boy her age who is working really hard to make a name for himself. Adam and her don't seem to get along, until she sees him at his brother's food truck and suddenly they find themselves spending more time together. Adam has big dreams but little funds, and eventually finds out his brother, and him, have an offer to move that could change their lives.
One of my favorite parts about this book where the consistencies between the two timelines, Tal is always talking to her father, in both she makes a deeper connection with her mom and also figures out what she wants for herself in the future. I think the consistencies were one the best parts for me, especially the growing the relationship with her mom. I also enjoyed that throughout both timelines Tal remains the same in a sense, there are no dramatic character differences one way or the other.
This book has both bisexual (among other queer) representation and Jewish representation, even showing different kinds of Jewish rep.
By the end of the book, you are allowed to pick which ending you want to see. Will Adam show up in NYC? Will you want to see what happens after Elly goes on a two week vacation to Europe? I loved the ability to read one (or in my case both).
This book was super fun and well written. I immediately felt connected to Tal and her story.
4/5 star read for me!
Going Bicoastal is scheduled to be published June 13, 2023.
