Two people from different worlds learn they have a lot more in common than they think.
Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy is a young adult graphic novel by Faith Erin Hicks. Though there are more novels by this author, this is the first time I have read one by her.
This story follows Alix, who is one of the star hockey players for her high school team on Vancouver Island. Though her first love is hockey, being bullied by the team captain has led her to almost losing her chance to join an under 18 camp for team Canada.
Ezra has just gone through a breakup, and is spending time planning out the next school musical with his friends. When Alix sees him being bullied for being 'gay' by another school bully, she is amazed to see how level headed he reacts and decides to ask for his help when it comes to not fighting back with fists.
As Alix and Ezra spend more time together, they learn about themselves and how much they actually have in common with each other. Alix starts trying to help with the play, while Ezra attends her games and tries to help her find her dad on the mainland. As they learn more about each other, their knowledge of themselves and their families is also grown. Alix starts to understand why her mom never comes to her games, and Ezra realizes he can open his heart to his mom's new boyfriend.
I really enjoyed the story within this book, I think by looking at the title you are led to believe it will be a little more light hearted but I think the way the story plays out and the characters grow is really organic. They both go through their normal 'I know everything' teenage-ness, while also learning to understand why their parents react the way they do.
I also really enjoyed the art in this book, though I do tend to like the more 'full color' graphic novels at times. I think the art helped with the story, and made you almost pay more attention to the lessen that were being learned.
A 3.5/5 star read for me!
This novel is scheduled to come out Oct 3, 2023.
