What happens when your dreams start to feel like they are real?
Cassie is a seemingly regular 17 year old, living in Florida, ready to graduate high school and go to college. But when she goes to sleep each night, she enters the body of 17 year old Sophia, a teen living in 1930s Riga.
Cassie's dreams start to effect her day to day when she no longer finds joy in being awake, longing to go back to sleep and see what is in store for Sophia and her love interest Daniil.
As Sophia and Daniil's relationship deepens, Cassie finds more comfort being asleep, longing to see Daniil for herself.
Daniil moves to America, promising to return in a year for Sophia and bring her to New York with him. Cassie and Sophia both wait for Daniil to return, hoping he will keep his promise. When he does return, a year later, he proposes to Sophia and brings her to his fancy apparently in New York City.
Sophia wonders how he made it so big so quickly, meeting some of the people he associates with who now call him 'Daniel'. After spending a few weeks getting used to her new life, with a cook and a maid, Sophia starts to help Daniel keep the books for his business, which is working for a bootlegger in the city. Daniel has worked his way the ladder, becoming one of the more important people in the ranks. After attending parties with Daniel, becoming more involved in the business, and feeling more out of touch with her old self, Sophia meets Will. Will is the doctor for the group, where they bring people who have been injured while working for them.
Sophia and Will start to talk more, finding comfort in someone who doesn't seem to think he 'owns' her. Cassie starts to see the red flags in Daniel, but can't do anything to help through her dreams. As the story continues, Cassie starts to wonder if Sophia will make it, after getting kidnapped to 'send Daniel' a message, she starts to live with Will, as they plan to run from the city and they life they don't care for.
After witnessing Sophia die in a dream, Cassie stops dreaming of her, finishing her college at FSU and moving to New York City herself. As Cassie settles into her new internship, with her friends and the city that feels very familiar, she meets Jason. Jason immediately attracts her, and their relationship moves fast. But when Jason starts to act as possessive as Daniel once did, Cassie starts to worry if she can escape the relationship alive.
I was really shocked by the turn this book took in the latter half of it. A twist that I honestly didn't see coming but really enjoyed. Sophia and Cassie are both very similar, yet handle things differently when it comes to their relationships. Cassie and her group in New York are interesting and when things start to come out about the similarity to Cassie and Sophia's story I felt myself way more interested in the text. Cassie as the beginning of the book is 17 and there are definitely moments you can tell that.
There is mentions of abuse and pretty spicy scenes within the book, so make sure to check out any triggers before reading.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story and am happy to have been able to review the ARC.
This book is scheduled to be published Jan 23, 2024.
