Opal is looking for a sign, and winning the lottery seems like the perfect one.
Opal Devlin is an artist, looking for the spark that gets her going again. When she is gifted a lottery ticket for her birthday, and ends up winning, she decides to take it as a sign. After buying a flower farm from a woman looking for a fresh start, Opal moves from her parent's house to a farm in Asheville, hoping the farm will give her the inspiration she needs to create.
She is not expecting the farm to be occupied by someone else, who had no idea the farm was sold, and has no intention of leaving. Pepper Smith continues to argue she is the rightful owner of the farm and after some disagreement they decide to live together, at least until Pepper can pay Opal back and buy the farm for herself.
Pepper is not a fan of change, and after being left at the farm with a grandmother she didn't know at 17, Pepper is not ready to leave only a few months after her grandmother's passing. The flower farm is not doing well financially, and Pepper is starting to become desperate to keep the power on. Now she has to get used to a new, loud roommate while trying to figure out her next move.
When Pepper's best friend brings up the idea of joining a competition for flower designs, Pepper is uneasy, but with Opal's artistic eye there is a chance they could win. The problem is they can't seem to see eye to eye and will need to get over their constant disagreeing to have something to submit. As they work out their feelings about their situations, and each other, the girls grow closer together, and gain more than just friendship.
Late Bloomer is an adult, sapphic read that leaves you feeling really warm inside. I enjoyed that the book didn't have everything always going right for the characters. They continued to have struggles and humps to get over. Though I am not autistic, Pepper is and there is a lot of her explaining how that impacts her life and how she deciphers things. Opal is a spitfire of a character, changing her hair like her emotions and having very little control over her situation. I enjoyed both of these characters a lot, and the story of how they came together even more.
The book does have some scenes that are 18+ so keep that in mind when gifting or looking at the book for yourself!
4 out of 5 stars for me!
Late Bloomer is expected to come out April 16, 2024!
