Book Review: Love at First Knight by Megan Clawson

Love at First Knight is the second book by British author Megan Clawson, who's books have a main setting in the Tower of London.

Her first novel, Falling Hard for the Royal Guard, was a book I read last year, after learning about the setting and knowing my own love for the Tower.

This book differs with having a main character who does not live within the Tower of London.

Daisy Hastings believes she is born in the wrong era. After moving back home after school, she spends her weekends with her family, LARPing as an elven knight. LARPing is 'live action roleplaying for those who may not know.

When her father submits an application for her to work at the Knight's School at the Tower of London, she is hired almost immediately. But Daisy is nervous to move away from her family, who are her comfort. She has barely been able to leave her hometown without feeling like she will have a panic attack. But the Knight School is the perfect way to show off her skills, and pretend to live in an era she loves. When she meets her eccentric roommate, Bobble, she is unsure if she is ready for this step but is excited to try.

When she is told to help the stubborn Viscount Theodore fit in with the school, she realizes she might have taken on more than she can chew. Teddy is the nephew of the king, who has spent a lot of his time giving the media stories that the king does not improve of. He has been sent to help at the Knight School so they can keep an eye on him, but he doesn't want the publicity or the fame from being in the royal family.

As he continues to get on Daisy's nerves, she starts to get in trouble for things Teddy has started, which makes her question if she even should be in London at all. After a turbulent series of events, Daisy is sent back home, where she puts all her energy into the large LARPing event, the Battle of Helm's Creek.

But the events in London don't seem to be disappearing into the past the way she wished, and after a quick kiss with the viscount, Daisy is scared she may have real feelings for a person she hoped to ignore.

I really enjoyed this book, much like the first one, just because of the setting. Daisy is a complex character, who has a lot of fear she only seems to get rid of when she is LARPing. I enjoyed her journey in gaining her own confidence and allowing herself to live and feel comfortable with the unknown.

There was a moment where I feared there would be a love triangle, but alas my fears were for nothing. I'm not a huge fan of love triangles in romance, and I'm glad this one worked out differently. There were also times that this story had a 'Young Royals' vibe that I really enjoyed. Overall, this book was a fun romance with historical setting I really enjoy. I hope she adds more to this series, and even though you don't need to read the books in order, they are briefly interconnected.

A 4 out of 5 star read for me!

This book is scheduled to come out May 7, 2024 in the US!
