Morbidly Yours by Ivy Fairbank is an adult romance that was originally self-published in 2023 and is now slated for a traditional release at the end August.
Callum Flannelly would rather dive into an open grave than take a stranger to dinner and a movie. But he can only inherit the family undertaking business and carry on their legacy under one condition: He must marry before his 35th birthday. So it’s out of the mortuary and into the dating scene.
Lark Thompson would rather get crushed by a falling anvil than stay next to a funeral home during her stay in Galway, Ireland. The vivacious American cartoon creator and animator came here to embrace life, not be reminded of losing her husband.
When Lark learns of Callum’s dilemma and aversion to marrying out of necessity rather than love, she agrees to help the introverted mortician. Although sworn off love herself, she is optimistic that Callum can find The One and secure his inheritance. But as the dating project progresses and their friendship grows, so does a mutual attraction. The more time she spends with serious, sarcastic Callum, the more she dreads finding him a match. And the more disastrous dates he endures, the more he dreads Lark’s imminent return to the states.
There were parts of this book that I adored and others that I found to be a little bit too much. One thing I wish was explored more was how Callum, technically, is asexual, and talks a lot about not always being sexually attracted to people until he knows them. I sort of wish this was explored more, mostly because it seems like the only person that turns him on is Lark. One part of it that I think would be fun is exploring more of his 'crazy' dates, because the ones that were mentioned I really did enjoy.
Lark has a lot to work through and though she mentions many times working through it, or trying, she does run off to Ireland with almost nothing. She definitely still has a lot to work through when she meets Callum and immediately puts her attention to helping him to avoid working on her own things. Her shitty coworker is definitely a bummer, and I dislike him, but sometimes there was too much time spent on how awful he was.
For the romance parts of this book, I did really enjoy them. I think how Callum and Lark fall for each other is really adorable but they definitely have more to work through at the time they finally get together. Especially since Lark talks him into a 'friends with benefits' that they are both too far in to manage.
Overall, this is a cute story. I think it would be a great romance read during 'spooky' season.
I gave the book 3,5 out of 5 stars.
This book is scheduled to come out August 20, 2024!
