A struggling artist and the chance to live in a cheap AF apartment in Chicago? Seems great!
My Roommate is a Vampire is a debut adult novel by Jenna Levine that came out this year.
The story follows Cassie, who is a struggling artist with multiple part-time jobs trying to keep her head above water while making her 'odd' art.
When she sees an ad in Craigslist saying they have an open room for $200 a month is seems sketchy, and definitely too good to be true. After turning the apartment and meeting Frederick, the owner. Cassie doesn't get the sense anything is off and decides to take the deal as a chance to get back on her feet and work on her art with a killer view.
That is until she comes home early from work one day and finds bags of blood next to her food. After panicking and running to her best friend's place, Cassie and Frederick come to terms with what happened. Leading Cassie to agree to help him learn how to fit in with modern society after being asleep for almost a century.
This book is an adorable, lighthearted take on vampires. Frederick is a gentleman, who is just trying to make sure he doesn't get caught as he navigates his way around one of the busiest cities in the world. Cassie just wants a chance to show off her art and make money doing it, instead of working at multiple places and still falling behind on bills.
I loved the contrast between the two characters, and Frederick not understanding social media, trains or much of any part of society today. The setting was Chicago, which I tend to also love. (Plus the 'vampire dungeon' being in Naperville? -chef's kiss-).
Overall the story was a fun, quick read and I really enjoyed it.
4 out of 5 stars for me!
