When given mysterious crystals that propel him into the future, Nolan Baker finds he might want to change his past.
New Adult by Timothy Janovsky, Nolan Baker is a 23 year old comedian who is hoping for his big break in NYC by the time he is 30. While helping plan his sister's wedding, Nolan starts to wonder if he needs to change his plans and move on by getting a new job and asking his best friend to be his date to the wedding.
When he receives the call of a lifetime during his sister's wedding he makes a rash discussion that ripples through all of his relationships.
After wishing on some crystals he received in his wedding gift bag, Nolan is now seven years in the future in a life that is completely unfamiliar to him. He only has the knowledge of his 'younger' self and is now thrown into a world where he is planning a comedy special and living the dream...but also seems to have burned all the bridges with the people he loves the most.
While trying to figure out how to get back to his timeline he works to mend the relationships with the friends and family he lost when accepting that call seven years ago. When the time comes to try to go back to his 23 year old self, Nolan starts to wonder if its even worth it after fixing the future.
This book is a fun combo of contemporary with a little bit of a magical twist; similar to 'One Last Stop'. Nolan, and his best friend Drew, are both interesting characters who have a lot of motivations for the choices they make. There is also a fun 'Thirteen going on Thirty' vibe, but aged up, with more expectations about how life can change in 7 years.
Though the beginning of this book was a little slow for me, I found myself drawn in after the time jump. I think having Nolan start to learn how his choices impacted everyone around him was were the story really started to get interesting to me. The magical element of the story was a fun twist that I really enjoyed as well, adding some fantasy to the 'real life' issues of the story.
This book was a 3.5 out of 5 stars for me.
New Adult is scheduled to be published August 15, 2023.
