Two mortals destined to be together, thrown into a game by the Gods.
Exes Ward Dunbar and Camille Buhay thought they would never see each other again after they split to pursue their dreams on different sides of the country. That is until years later they run into each other in London, where they are interviewing for similar jobs.
They immediately feel that spark again, and decide to spend the night together and decide to give the relationship another try, even when accepting jobs on different shifts.
Ward starts on the dayshift, finding the immortal clients of the shop surprising and dazzling. He is excited to end his first day and see Camille at the hotel she is staying at, except when he goes to leave the door has locked him in. Desperate to get out, he fights throughout the night only to learn he cannot leave.
Camille attends her first overnight shift, working with spirits and ghosts, only to find herself stuck in the store with no hopes of getting out. After finding a secret apartment and food for herself, she starts to make friends with the owner, Mr. Carson, while trying to figure out how to escape.
As they both try to find a way to escape and back to each other, they find themselves as pawns in a war between Gods. After finding a way to talk for a few minutes a day, they reignite their spark and continue to fight through puzzles, immortal beings and expectations to find their way back to each other.
This book was sent to me by a represenative from Penguin Random House, and I am super grateful for it! Overall, I'm not sure if I would have picked this book up just based on it's description but I am so happy with how much I enjoyed the story and puzzles within it while reading.
Ward and Camille both handle their situations differently, Ward is quick to trust some shady Gods, while Camille takes time to analyze and learn as much as she can about the situation around them. Though they can only speak for a few moments, or through notes shared by the Gods, they manage to work together to find a way to both stay alive and see each other again.
I found the Gods and mythos behind the text really creative too. There was a mix of religions and some deeper lore as to why this war was going on and why two mortals were involved in making this choice to end it.
The ending of the story was happy, with connections back to this world the two characters experienced by could not remember.
This book is adult, which was unnoticed by me at first, with some scenes that definitely are more geared towards adults.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story and liked that it is a standalone novel.
4 out of 5 stars!
This book comes out February 20th, 2024!
