Book Review: Out of Character by Jenna Miller

What happens when your secret online life and your real life meet? Chaos. Obviously.

Out of Character by Jenna Miller is a debut young adult novel that will grace the world on February 7, 2023. The story follows Cass Williams, who would describe herself as fat, queer and obsessed with a book series called Tide Wars. Cass spends most, if not all, of her free time roleplaying Tide Wars online with a close group, especially when she is using it to avoid drama that seems to be abundant in her real life. Her lies slowly begin to catch up with her when she visits Rowan, one of her online friends, in Chicago and sparks start to fly.

Cass and her best friend Tate quickly made their way into my heart. Their relationship as best friends is something any high schooler would be jealous of as well as the complications of adding other relationships in as well. The only community for the roleplay is also a dynamic group, bringing back memories of when the internet was a little newer and the friendships we'd make there.

The drama in the book, with Cass's friends and her roleplay group felt so real and believable, especially for teenagers. Cass's reactions to other events and her way of dealing, or avoiding, the situation feels so real as well. Any teen who has felt like they are hiding something, from their friends, family or anyone will know the stress Cass feels while also wanting to push her to tell the truth.

Though some of the characters initially feel 'wrong' to like, the arcs they take are a journey that leaves you liking them in the end.

And, no one can forget the sassy cat Mr. Tuttles, who just happens to love to escape in the worst moments. But you won't get any spoilers from me. ;)

Overall, this book was a 5 star read for me because of the strong writing, the storyline and overall the loveable characters. I really enjoyed the pieces of the roleplay at the beginning of each chapter, which gives you a great insight to Cass and her online relationships.

Out of Character is currently a standalone, and the first book by Jenna Miller, and definitely worth getting your hands on in February. Oh, and make sure to have a box of donuts with you! This book will make you crave them.
