Lahey Johnson is notorious for finding love for her friends and classmates, but when she needs a date to her cousin's birthday...things become complicated.
Plus One is a young adult novel by Kelsey Rodkey, who has written two other YA books. The story follows Lahey Johnson, who is determined to find a date to her cousin Summer's sweet 16. Which happens to only be a week away.
Lahey's revenge plan includes dates with 6 guys, all that which seem to get messed up by the presence of her older sister's annoying friend Adler. Adler just always seems to be where Lahey is and his interference seems to be ruining her chances at finding a date.
After a week of crazy antics, a twist brings the two together as dates. The issue? Lahey's drive for revenge seems to over take her ability to take in what is good around her.
This book fell in the 3.5-4 star out of 5 for me. Lahey's antics were fun for a bit, before becoming a little annoying and by the end a little too dramatic for me. Near the middle to end of the book I found myself wishing she'd give up the revenge plot, because it was causing the other parts of her life to fall apart. Now, as an almost 30 year old, I can understand the drive at 15/16 to want to one up everyone and prove that you are capable of love. Her drive and willingness to embarrass herself make sense for age, but her abandoning of her friends, and losing sight of some of the important things around her became a lot for me at a certain point.
I did however like how the story was written, with the whole story taking place within the seven days of Lahey planning for the party. With any information we needed about her successes before being told to us. I also enjoyed her artistic best friend and the way that even though he was annoying, you could tell Adler cared enough to make sure she was OK.
Plus One comes out on June 27, 2023, so make sure to pre-order!
