Book Review: Sinner's Isle by Angela Montoya

A young witch tries to change her fate, while a pirate tries to find his.

Sinner's Isle is a debut young adult novel by Angela Montoya that will be coming out later this year.

The story follows Rosalinda, who is trapped in the palace on Sinner's Isle, where girls who have powers, Majestics, are held until they are offered to the highest bidder. Rosa is expected to be the prized commodity at this years Offering, with the plan to woo the king into binding with her.

When her and her best friend Juana attempt to flee they get caught, with Juana being held captive to keep Rosa tame during the celebration. If Rosa doesn't follow the orders of the her mistress, Juana will be tortured.

While still dreaming of escape, Rosa does her best to figure out a plan. That is when Mariano enters. The son of two of the most famous pirates and currently alone except for one other who abandoned ship after his father's death. Mariano and his companion Santi find themselves on the island during the Offering, and try to blend in to steal and ship and make their way back to their home. Mariano ends up making a deal with Rosa, he will find where Juana is hidden and help her off the island, while she holds onto a jewel that was gifted to him by his father. The two find themselves fighting against time and the people around them to get what they want, an escape.

Overall, I ended up really enjoying this book. There were parts at the beginning where the magic confused me but once I came to understand it everything got a lot better. The dynamic of Rosa and Mariano was really fun, going from flirty to fighting, to both and back. I will say, I'm not a huge fan of the whole 'mate' thing in stories, but I wasn't too mad about it within this one. There are also some uses of Spanish words and phrases that were really enjoyable and I think brought a lot to what the story was based on and around for the author. A really fun debut, and though I don't know if there will be a sequel or not, the ending is definitely one that leaves you without that need for 'give me more immediately'.

A solid 4/5 star book for me.

Sinner's Isle is scheduled to be released Oct 31, 2023.
