Book Review: The Art of Catching Feelings by Alicia Thompson

Daphne Brink has just made her divorce official, and decides to use the tickets meant for her husband to go to a baseball game with her best friend.

She doesn't expect to get as drunk as she does, which leads her to start yelling at one of the players who is having a bad season.

After causing the player to shed tears, she quickly leaves the stadium and goes home. While recovering from her hangover, she types a message to the player on Instagram, ready to apologize for what she yelled, since she doesn't know much about baseball anyway.

But when she forgets to send the apology and instead starts a conversation, she can't seem to get herself to tell him the truth. As they start to share secrets and stories through messages, and eventually phone calls, Daphne can't find the right time to tell him she meant to apologize, plus right now he thinks her name is Duckie.

When Daphne ends up filling in as a local reporter for the team, since her sister-in-law is pregnant, she starts to make a new friendship with Chris. But Chris doesn't know Daphne and Duckie as the same person, and now the feelings are too complicated to find a time to be open with him.

As Duckie and Chris's relationship falls apart, Daphne and Chris's starts to grow. They decide to only hookup during road trips, which then turns into shared kisses at the home stadium and eventually sleep overs. But while Daphne is trying to find the right time to tell Chris the truth, he starts playing better, and the truth may destroy all he has worked for.

This story has a good amount of tension, especially with Daphne and the reader being the ones that know the secret. Daphne does genuinely try to tell Chris the truth multiple times throughout the story. But even as a reader you sometimes feel like it isn't the right time. Daphne definitely digs herself a hole but something about it is also rather believable. I think her character also grows a lot throughout the story.

As she struggles with keeping a 'who knows what' sort of vibe, Chris is enjoying her company. I overall really liked Chris as a character, especially being the athlete of the story. He was a softer character, who had spent a lot of his time hiding his feelings and reactions to things around him. I liked how he grew into being more comfortable with both himself and his emotions as well as the game.

I have found most of the books I've read by Alicia Thompson to be really well written, with the dual POVs and the deeper understanding of both of the characters. I overall really liked this book, and the baseball in it, even though I'm not much of a baseball person in real life. The romance was also very well done, with their slow growth of feelings to something more seeming pretty believable.

This book was 5/5 stars for me!

The Art of Catching Feelings is scheduled to come out Tuesday July 18th!
