A girl who can see the threads that create magic who finds herself in the middle of a plot to kill the king.
The first thing that should be noted is this book is the start of a new series, 7 years after the Shades of Magic Trilogy. That being said, anything you need to know to enjoy the book, and that characters who come back, is mentioned within this book.
So you could read it without reading the original trilogy, but I would highly recommend reading it anyway because it is fantastic.
Tesali is working in a shop specializing in fixing clocks, watches and other household trinkets. Though she calls herself an apprentice, she is the owner of the shop, and uses her power to fix the items that are brought in. Her powers? She can see the threads that connect things together, especially those that are magic.
When a sick man comes in, begging her to finish a broken item before slipping away she becomes suspicious, but accepts that challenge. That is until a couple of assassins come in to get the item instead of the man, and Tes starts to realize the full scope of what she was been drawn into.
Kell and Lila have spent the last 7 years at sea. Lila enjoying the freedom she has always craved, plus being in charge of a crew. Kell has to learn how to handle life without magic and is suffering with feeling broken, even as Lila teaches him how to fight with knives. After hearing that an item that could create doors between worlds has been stolen, Kell and Lila are brought back to their home. Red London. One of the four Londons that exist between four different worlds. Where Kell's brother Rhy is now king, and the people are unhappy about it. The king does not have magic, and magic seems to be draining from their world.
In White London, a child queen has taken over in the place of the last. She has powerful magic she barely understands and little knowledge of the other worlds. As she speaks to the ghost of the person who's magic she has inherited, she start to be learn more and more about the power she holds.
I absolutely adored the first three books in the Shades of Magic series. They involve magic, love and piracy. You have Lila Bard, who is talented with knives and getting herself out of situations. Kell is the brother of the prince, full of magic. Rhy and Alucard, who's love won't allow for an heir but is more important than anything else.
This new book was a nice trip back to character's I love, with the addition of new and interesting characters that I can't wait to learn more about in the next books. There is the normal Schwab hints and plot lines that leave you wanting more. I am very excited to see where this series goes. Especially with having some of these older characters there and ready to help with things.
A 5 out of 5 star read for me!
