Talasyn and Alaric are on opposite side of a war they could end.
The Hurricane Wars is a debut new adult novel by Thea Guanzon. The story follows Talasyn, an orphan who has spent most of her life fighting. Now she is fighting against the Night Empire, and its legion of shadow wielders. But Talasyn has a secret, she is a light weaver, who could possibly help end the war that she's been apart of most of her life.
Prince Alaric is the sun of the ruthless Night Emperor, and the heir to the empire they are trying to create. Alaric is the most power shadow weaver in the realm, having never been bested in battle. That is until he meets Talasyn.
As Talasyn tries to retreat from a battle, she comes face to face with the Night Empire's Prince and uses her secret to survive. The light magic that killed his grandfather and ignited the Hurricane Wars hasn't been seen in years. He gets bested by her and finds it his mission to find Talasyn and make sure the lingering light weaver is swept from the map.
As they meet in battle, Alaric starts to become intrigued by his new enemy, eventually following her on a mission that is the last ditch effort for her side. Talasyn needs to communicated with the Light Sever to fully understand her power, the problem is the sever is located within an island country that doesn't welcome guests, especially those connected to the Hurricane Wars.
When she is caught by the prince of Nenavar, she learns a secret about herself that could change everything for her and the war around them. Now thrown into the politics of countries and hoping that her friends are safe, and falling into a betrothal she never would have agreed to otherwise.
I adored this book. The magic elements are amazing and I love how the magic works within the story and on either side of the war the characters are fighting in. Talasyn is a stubborn, rough around the edges character who has lost a lot throughout her 20 years of life. Alaric is fighting for what his father wants, hoping for some kind of approval from someone who is out for revenge. When the two some together the tension is well written and their magic's interaction is interesting and fun. I'm excited to see where this series goes and will be waiting rather impatiently for the sequel.
There is also an interesting weather element within the book, that both connects with magic and just the world they are in. There are stormships that destroy with lightning and an 'everstorm' that protects parts of the islands. I liked the influence of the weather elements on magic. I also really enjoyed reading the author's note at the end of the book that mentions how the weather influence worked into the book as well, with the author being from the Philippines and being inspired by the storms that hit that region on the world.
There is some 'Reylo' vibes from the characters that I also found myself really enjoying. It's not obvious enough where you imagine the story that way, but there are moments where you kind of go 'ah yes, there it is' and I was completely okay with that.
I love a weather influenced fantasy book, definitely connects my loves together.
A 4.5 out of 5 star read for me!
The Hurricane Wars is out now! I highly recommend checking it out!
