Book Review: The Improbable Meet-Cute Collection

Six stories, six different couples, short rom-coms to warm your heart.

The Improbable Meet-Cute is a collection of six novellas by six different romantic comedy authors.

The stories in the collection include:

  • The Exception to the Rule by Christina Lauren

  • Worst Wingman Ever by Abby Jimenez

  • Rosie and the Dreamboat by Sally Thorne

  • Drop, Cover and Hold On by Jasmine Guillory

  • With Any Luck by Ashley Poston

  • Royal Valentine by Sariah Wilson

Each of these stories takes place on Valentine's Day, with some of the stories interconnecting. Reading them in order helps have the cameos make sense, but each can be enjoyed on their own as well. For the whole series, I rated them between 3-4 stars, with two being standouts for me.

The Exception to the Rule follows two people who meet after one accidently emails the other while they are both in high school. Instead of learning who each other are, they spend the next 10 years exchanging Valentine's Day emails and life updates, keeping their identities hidden until they finally decide to meet in person. 4 out of 5 stars for me!

Worst Wingman Ever starts with Holly who, while watching her dying grandmother, finds a Valentine on her card that was left there by someone she does not know. This leads to apology letters, little figurines and other things exchanged between her and the mystery man. As their relationship seems to come to an end, they run into each other a lot closer to home. 3 out of 5 stars for me!

Rosie and the Dreamboat follows Rosie, who has treated her sister to an expensive spa date to celebrate a promotion. While there, Rosie gets stuck in a sensory deprivation pod and has to be rescued by the fire department. As Rosie starts to panic, a firefighter on the outside talks to her about her life, dreams and helps calm her down until they can get her out and binge all the pizza he has promised her. 3.5 out of 5 stars for me!

Drop, Cover and Hold On takes place in a bakery during an earthquake. Daisy wanted to avoid the bakery, after the baker has only seemed to dislike her, but when she stops in and an earthquake hits, they find themselves stuck together until someone can help them out. She then learns the baker has had a crush on her this whole time, and they start to discuss their feelings over pastries. 3 out of 5 stars for me!

With Any Luck is the story of Audrey Luck, who is the best man for her best friends wedding, but when she accidently loses the groom, her and the man of honor go on a wild adventure to find them. All while Audrey explains that her curse is to help people find their true love and she is scares that is what happened with the groom. 4 out of 5 stars!

Royal Valentine follows Princess Ilara, who is trying to have a trip in Rome without the paparazzi following her around. She trades places with her PR person, and tries to see the sties, only to pass out and be taken in by two people who help her feel better. The problem? He thinks she is someone else. Even after their magical day, she is worried he won't accept who she is. 3 out of 5 stars for me!

Overall, I really liked this collection. They were all fun, lighthearted reads on my Kindle that put me in a rom-com mood. They all had a slightly different vibe and it was fun to read them in between some higher fantasy novels.

These shorter stories are really good for an easy read at night, maybe with some candles and your drink of choice. These are on Kindle Unlimited and fairly cheap if you don't have that service. There is also narrations too if that is more your vibe!

I highly recommend checking them out!
