Book Review: The Rom-Commers by Katherine Center

Emma Wheeler desperately wants to be a screenwriter, she has spend years studying rom-coms and working to create her own. The issue? She has spent the last 10 years being a fulltime sole caretaker for her father, while her younger sister has gone to school. When she gets the chance to help rewrite a script for Charlie Yates, one of her favorite writers she is ready for the challenge.

Except it would mean moving to LA for 6 weeks. When Emma's younger sister steps in to help, Emma decides to take the chance on going to California, where she finds out she is not only working with Charlie Yates, but will be living in his huge house with him.

Charlie doesn't want to work with anyway, and after calling Emma a 'failed writer' she is not feeling too confident about the situation. Especially since the rom-com he wrote is a 'crime against humanity' that he only did to try to get another script green-lit. But Emma is ready to put her all into this story and make a name for herself after so many years in the house.

Emma starts to work on convincing Charlie that love stories matter, and they don't always have to be cheesy. She starts to help him face his fears and shows him how small things can actually be romantic. But when she starts to develop real feelings for Charlie, things get complicated. His own love life hasn't been great and he currently shares custody of a Guinea Pig with his ex-wife. Emma is determined to make Charlie believe in love, even he tries to push her away.

This story had a lot of deeper elements I wasn't expecting. Charlie is a survivor of cancer, who has a scare if might be back. Emma had to witness the tragedy of her parents getting serious injured and her mom passing away, believing for years it was her fault. She is scared of leaving her dad with her sister and going so far away, but starts to love what it feels like to be in charge of only herself.

There are a lot of emotional scenes in the book, with many of them having strong words and emotions tied to them. This book was definitely a wild ride of emotions at times.

Overall, I found the story itself really interesting and I am a sucker for a story with writers as the main characters. There is a lot driving both of the characters, and once you get a break down of their thought processes it really helps.

This story was a 4/5 stars for me!

The Rom-Commers is expected to come out June 11, 2024.
