When you fall in love with someone 7 years in the past? Will you love who they are in the future?
The Seven Year Slip is the most recent novel by Ashley Poston, who has quite the backlist of both young adult and now, adult books.
Clementine has lost a lot in the past year with her favorite aunt passing away and her love life seemingly non-existent. As she continues to work as a publicist for a book publisher in NYC, she moves into her aunt's old apartment that was left to her in the will.
Except, she wakes up one day to find a strange man in the apartment, insisting her aunt said he could stay for the summer. As Clementine tries to understand what happens, she realizes something else...she is 7 years in the past.
Now, she finds herself breaking one of the two rules of her aunt's apartment. Don't fall in love within the apartment. Clementine spends the weekend with this man, Iwan, who is working his way up through the restaurant business. He spends the weekend making her dinner, baking her lemon pie and becoming the one person she may be able to fall in love with. But 7 years ago, her aunt was alive and Clementine is 22 looking for her own future.
When she starts to question if they would even make it in her current timeline, Iwan comes back into her life...as James Ashton a sought after chef for one of the most prestigious restaurants in the city. He also happens to be the client her publisher is hoping to work with to keep themselves afloat. Now, Clementine must work with James as they navigate how they feel about each other now and the professional world around them.
Like Dead Romantics, her other adult novel, this one has a fun magical element I really enjoyed. I like Clementine having to choose her words carefully once she knows that 'now' James knows about the past, and remembers a lot about their encounters. I also really enjoy Ashley Poston's writing, similarly to Dead Romantics, there is quite the cast of characters to adore throughout the story. Also, shoutout to the Dead Romantics cameo in this story as well.
This was a solid 5/5 star read for me.
