Can two former best friends survive a musical festival together?
Jana Rubio has been looking forward to an outdoor music festival at the Orchards since before the start of senior year. Initially planning on going with her best friend, Maddy, the two end up fighting when Maddy's boyfriends seems to take priority over Jana.
After working out getting a ride to the festival, two hours from home, with the plan of getting home in time to pick up her dad from a work retreat, it looks like nothing can ruin this day.
That is until she see's her friends younger brother in the van, plus Maddy and her boyfriend Tyler. Not only is she surprised to see Maddy, but they are dressed similarly. After a long drive there, Jana is hoping seeing her favorite bad will make her feel better. But when Nathan, the driver, decides to crowd surf and loses the keys to the van in the process, the night starts to take a turn for Jana.
Now Jana and crew must try to find the keys in the middle of a festival, while also hoping to make it home in time for Jana to help her dad out. Jana, terrified of failing her parents becomes desperate as they search high and low for the keys in the muddy ground of the festival.
Overall, this book was a solid middle ground for me. I found Jana annoying at times, even thought her worries about her parents thoughts seem to drive a lot of how she feels. I think the feelings Jana is struggling are pretty normal for a senior in high school, who is trying to live up to expectations she has almost set for herself. She is spending a lot of the story proving she is not her older sister, who she sees as 'disappointing' her parents. I think the secondary characters, like Nathan's younger brother Everett, are really entertaining. They bring a lot of personality to the story as a whole. It was a quick read, as it takes place mostly during the festival with some flashbacks to the early parts of Maddy and Jana's relationship.
Overall, a 3 out of 5 star read for me.
This book is scheduled to be published April 16, 2024.
