Book Soundtracks: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Welcome to a new style of blog, where I go through a few songs I think really connect to some books I love dearly. Now, it should be stated that these are my opinions and feelings about both the book and the songs. I also tend to stay within a few genres, so if you feel like a song from a different artist would also fit, please leave a comment below! I'd love to know your opinion as well!

I decided to start this new style with a book I adore, and think about a lot with some songs I've been listening to throughout the years.

That book? Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

If you are unfamiliar, here is a quick rundown. Six of Crows is apart of the Grishaverse series by Bardugo, and follows a ragtag group of teens who find themselves in the midst of a cruel world that is mostly against them. Led by a young criminal, Kaz Brekker, they find themselves performing the heist of a century, that will leave them either filthy rich or dead. The book is apart of the overall series, falling 4th if you read them in order, but Six of Crows, and its sequel Crooked Kingdom, continue to top my list of favorite books I've ever read.

Now for the list of music, these are songs that when either reading the book, or hearing the lyrics I would think back to characters, scenes or just the book overall.

Saints of the Sinners by The Faim

Now, when I say the first time I heard this song I went 'my babies!' because I immediately thought of the Crows. This song has beautiful lyrics, as well as a really fun beat. Part of me hoped it would somehow make its way into the 'Shadow and Bone' series on Netflix when the Crows showed up. Something about this song has always brought me back to the group. "We're coming for you" to "we play it dirty, forever thirsty to bring the trophy home' the lyrics in this song just seem perfect to match Kaz and his team. Even the title of the song works really well in the Grishaverse alone.

Like A Villain by Bad Omens

There should be no shock that Bad Omens made it on this list, especially this song. Again, another lyrically beautiful song. I think this song specifically reminds me on Kaz, who I should state is one of my favorite morally-grey boys in the YA world. Kaz goes through a lot throughout the series, and becomes basically a criminal prodigy in Ketterdam. One of the lyrics that really gets me in this song is, "Like a villain, I couldn't be. I didn't need it, it needed me." Something about that reminds me so much of Kaz's background and the things he is hiding during the series, as well as a lot of his emotional unavailability during the book. I feel like it just a good 'theme' song for him overall.

Bad Things by I Prevail

This song could probably again be one about just Kaz, but I feel like all of the Crows come up in it a bit. They all have been through their own traumas, and have their own goals in succeeding in their heist. They are either running from their past, or trying to find their families, or have no families left. The Crows are a good explain of 'found family' and I feel like this song really covers all of them well. The lyrics, 'I'm holding onto hope but it only assures me I'm in love with bad things,' just really seem to cover a lot of basis for that for me. Plus the last line of the song is, 'the devil is real and I'm caught in his grip.' Which if that doesn't explain the Crows to a tee, I don't know what does.

What do you think? Have you read Six of Crows or any of the Grishaverse? Any songs that make you think of certain characters in that series? OR are there any characters in other series that certain songs remind you of? Leave a comment below!
