Happy ending of April and introduction to May! To no one's shock, Minnesota is still cold so I'm still finding myself reading books inside instead of on the balcony like I prefer. We read another 6 books this month and I'm so excited to share them with you!
Master of One by Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett
This book has been out a little bit and I picked up once the paperback was published. It is a stand alone young adult fantasy that follows a thief who is cursed by a sorcerer to try to find some ancient relics.
Along the way we meet a Fae, an ex-queensguard, and many more as well as their mythical pets. The six of them are destined to come together to find a specific Fae relic, but they have to find a way out of the sorcerer's grasp first.
I enjoyed this book, though it took me a bit to get into once the POVs started changing. We love to see stand-alone fantasy books.
3.5 / 5 stars from me
Robin by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo
It is no secret that I am a sucker for teen titans stories and that the previous graphic novels in this series have been a joy to read. Now we get Robin! and not just one robin but two!
Damian Wayne was first mentioned in the novel prior to this one, after he ran away from home. In this novel we get to meet Dick Grayson as well, which after watching the show Titans, yes please.
The collective Robins find themselves trying to mend their friendship while also working with Beast Boy and Raven to understand their powers and figure out why Slade Wilson is after them.
And at the end?! A hint to Starfire! 5/5 stars!
A Guide to Being Just Friends by Sophie Sullivan
To cleanse the pallet a bit before jumping into another fantasy, I decided to pick up a rom-com, and let me tell you this book is a SLOW BURN.
I think around half way through I was really hoping for the main characters to kiss, it definitely takes its time, but Hailey and Wes are trying to just 'be friends'.
Hailey moves to San Verde to start a restaurant that serves 'on the go' salads, while Wes and his brothers work in investments and coding. The two have a failed meet cute and end up becoming friends as Hailey works on starting her business.
Overall a really cute book. 3/5 stars. I also think it is the last in a series about the brothers (oops)
Godly Heathens by H.E. Edgmon
This book follows Gem, a non-binary teen living in Georgia, who is waiting for a chance to escape and join their friend Enzo in Brooklyn.
That is until a new student shows up at their school and seems to know more about Gem than they know about themselves, especially when it comes to the magical and violent dreams Gem has almost every night.
Gem finds themselves stuck between what is expected of them, and wanting the normal life they had been dream of for years.
This book is a fun young adult fantasy that won't be published until later this year. 3.5-4/5 stars from me, with its own blog coming soon!
Loathe at First Sight by Suzanne Park
I think I really wanted to like this book, but it fell a little flat for me. This book follows Melody, who is working at a tech/gaming company and gets the opportunity to design a game. This opportunity comes mostly as a fluke, with the demand for 'female' gamers.
While working hard on this project, Melody finds herself getting the attacked by trolls on the internet and some of her male coworkers, leading to a whole series of events.
What I was really hoping for with this book was more enemies to lovers, but I feel like Melody and Nolan missed that a bit. Some of the horrible language towards women and racial slurs were also a lot for me at times. 2.5 or 3 out of 5 stars for me.
The Isles of the Gods by Amie Kaufman
The Isle of the Gods is a young adult fantasy novel what will be coming out the first week of May.
It follows Selly, who is trying to be reunited with her merchant father when she ends up back on the ship she was trying to escape because they took on a new task. Bring the magician prince to the Isle of the Gods.
This book is full of the sea, magic, villains who we get the view point of, and sleeping Gods who have more power than we think. I loved the adventure within this book and the journey it took me, and the characters on.
I'm excited to see where this series progress. 4 out of 5 stars for me!
Overall, I had a lot more fantasy reads this month, which was really fun for me. I did think for a bit I was falling behind, but managed to catch up and keep the thing going!
