Monthly Wrap Up: August Reads

Happy start of September everyone! August apparently was a big reading month of me. I got through a few arcs, some newer books and some highly anticipated reads for me. We tried to cover a few genres, with mostly romance and some fantasy mixed it. Overall, a really fun reading month for me.

What books did you enjoy this month? Share some below!

Give Me A Sign by Anna Sortino

I absolutely adored this book. It follows Lilah, who has had hearing loss since birth. She decides to become a counselor at a camp she used to go to as a child. Lilah is trying to find where she belongs in between her hearing friends and the kids with her at camp.

While at camp, she starts using ASL more consistently, with a boy at camp offering her help with it. As she learns more about herself and how she wants to present herself to the world, she also starts to fall for Isaac.

I really enjoyed this book, and its perspective on the world of disabilities, especially those that might not be as obvious to the outside world. It had a really powerful message about community and belonging.

With Love, From Cold World by Alicia Thompson

With Love, From Cold World is a newly released adult novel by Alicia Thompson. Lauren Fox is the bookkeeper for Cold World, an icy themed attraction in Orlando, FL. Though it doesn't compete much with the other attractions in the city, it is a fun place to work, with Lauren felt 'fun'.

Asa Williamson has been working at Cold World for almost a decade, and when him, Lauren and the owner's son are challenged to find a way grow business, he tries his best to think of a way to save the place that feels like home.

Asa and Lauren don't necessarily get along, she is too serious and he seems to take nothing seriously, that is until they are locked in Cold World together overnight and feelings might start to change. This book was a fun read with some romance and a cute background of an out of place snow globe in Florida.

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

This book was a reread for me, since the movie premiered this month and I wanted a refresh on the story.

Alex is the son of the first female president of the United States, and finds himself constantly in the spotlight and apart of the latest gossip magazines. Henry is the 'spare' to the throne in England and proclaimed nemesis of Alex. At his brother's wedding, Henry and Alex find themselves arguing, which turns into the loss of a massive wedding cake and sudden need for some diplomacy.

As the two try to fake a friendship for the media they also begin to grow closer in other ways, ways that Henry never thought would be allowed. Alex and Henry have to hide their relationship for the sake of international relations and find it difficult. There is a full blog on this book, and honestly I love it, the reread was a lot of fun.

A Pretty Implausible Premise by Karen Rivers

This book is the story of two teens who are struggling with the aftermath of their own tragedies. Hattie hasn't been in a swimming pool since the day she failed to save a child from drowning Presley has just moved to California in the wake of a car crash that has taken away his Olympic dreams and killed his twin brother.

They both see the ghosts of their pasts, even when they don't want to. Hattie has found comfort in a book that was gifted to her during a breakdown, and Presley starts to find Hattie fascinating.

As they grow closer, they start to learn more about each other and about who they could be. This book has a really fun message about dealing with your ghosts and allowing yourself to forgive, especially yourself.

Night of the Witch by Sarah Raasch and Beth Revis

Night of the Witch is a young adult fantasy and romance that is scheduled to come out in October. It follows a witch who has just watched her coven burn, and a hunter who is hoping to destroy that system that has ended the lives of innocent people for the past few years.

Frizti and Otto go from enemies to needing to learn to trust each other after learning their goals overlap. Frizti hopes to find her cousin, the only other survivor of an attack on her coven. Otto wants to find his sister, and save those who have been condemned as witches.

Their journey brings them both closer together and opens both of their eyes to how what they have been told might not have been the whole truth. This book was a great way to start some witchy reads and I'm excited to see how the series continues.

Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy by Faith Erin Hicks

Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy is a young adult graphic novel by Faith Erin Hicks that comes out in a month.

The story follows Alix, who is a star of her school hockey team but finds herself bullied by the captain and Ezra, who participates in the all the schools musicals, working together to find themselves and manage their reactions to the world around them.

Alix and Ezra quickly become friends, attending events for each other and supporting each other through the hardships of the world around them. The story does a really good job of exploring different kinds of relationships and how people can think they are acting in a nice way but its not. I really enjoyed this story and the art within it.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

Aristotle is an angry teenager, who doesn't have many friends and is wondering why his parents never talk to him about his brother.

One summer day, he meets know-it-all Dante at the pool, who offers to teach him how to swim. The two become fast friends, with Dante becoming one of the only people Ari can even stand.

After hanging out almost every day of summer, they are seperated when Dante's dad takes a job in Chicago for the school year. While exchanging letters and waiting for summer to return, the boys learn about each other and themselves.

As the year goes on, Ari finds himself questioning a lot of what he knew, and growing into a person he doesn't hate. This book is lovely, I highly recommend it.

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

Violet Sorrengail is the youngest daughter of the commanding general is being forced into the Riders Quadrant, even though she worked towards being a Scribe. Now she needs to find a way to survive the harsh environments of the Riders Quadrant, an intense environment where you need to be strong to survive and have a dragon bond with you.

Violet now is fighting for her life, with other candidates trying to murder her, her body betraying her and only so many dragons willing to bond with humans. She also finds herself under the wing of one of the more intense wingleaders.

This book has been really hyped, and I liked it but am playing on writing a full blog with thoughts and feelings about it.

Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams

So, I would first like to admit I did not read the first book in this series. Which outside of some references and having the beginning of the first book spoiled, I don't think matters too much? But either way, my bad.

Annie Walker is the town 'angel' who struggles to date and seems to be under the care of everyone in Rome, KY. As her brother prepares for his wedding, Will Griffin shows up to work as security for her brother's superstar girlfriend.

Annie has always wished to be married, have a family. Will lives on the wild side, looking to escape Rome as soon as possible. They start to grow closer, and suddenly both start to question what they want in the future.

A cute book with nothing too spicy, a good follow up to a fantasy for sure.
