Monthly Wrap Up: May Reads

May seems to have been the month of many random books for me. There were a lot of romantic comedies, two advances copies and a few newly published books I just couldn't wait to read. Overall, a solid reading month. I thank the weather for cooperating so I could finally start reading outside again. I need all the sun time I can get while being someone who works all nights and sees the sun very little during the winter. There were some solid reads this month, a two that involved sports romances, many that were queer and some about finding love again.

Happy Place by Emily Henry

I am a big fan of Emily Henry's writing, and usually find that I finish her books quickly because I become totally immersed in them.

I loved the banter between the two main characters, Wyn and Harriet. I also really enjoyed having the looks back on their relationship to see how they got where they are today.

I found Wyn and Harriet to be really fun main characters, and their group of friends definitely supported a lot of the antics within the book.

Plus, I enjoyed this group of friends meeting up 10 years later, in their 30s. Something about having 30 year old characters was really nice. 4/5 stars for me!

Cleat Cute by Meryl Wilsner

Cleat Cute follows two female professional soccer players as they navigate their relationship on and off the field.

Grace Henderson has been a star soccer player since she was 16. Phoebe Matthews just got drafted, but has big dreams of being on the US National Team.

When Grace is out with injury, she starts to wonder if Phoebe was ever actually into her or just wanted her spot on both teams.

Overall this was a 3/5 star book for me that will have a full review blog of its own. It comes out in September and I would recommend if you want some spicy Sapphic soccer romance.

Going Bicoastal by Dahlia Adler

Going Bicoastal is a really fun YA romcom that follows Natalya Fox as she tries to make the decision between staying in NYC or going to LA for the summer.

But instead of showing just one timeline, flips between two alternating timelines depending on her choice, very similar to the movie Sliding Doors.

We get to follow Tal in LA as she mends her relationship with her mother and falls for her co-intern. OR Tal in NYC, when she finally learns the name of her redheaded crush.

This book was super fun to read, and gives you a choice to pick the ending you want. Which is super cool. 4/5 stars for me.

Falling Hard for the Royal Guard by Megan Clawson

Falling Hard for the Royal Guard is a debut novel that follows a character named Maggie, who lives in the Tower of London with her father.

After having a turbulent breakup and no success at finding love, Maggie is starting to believe her only loves will be a cat and a raven.

That is when she meets Freddie, who is currently stationed at the tower as a Royal Guard. They form a quick friendship, but every so often he pulls away. She agrees with one of the other royal guard to go on 5 Tinder dates before she completely gives up on love. When her 5th date ends up being with Freddie, bringing her into his world, she finds herself confused and still hoping for a fairytale. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

As You Walk on By by Julian Winters

As You Walk on By is a young adult novel that follows Theo as he plans on asking his longtime crush to prom on a dare.

After the promposal goes wrong, Theo finds himself hanging out with a ragtag group at a party and learning their reasons as to why they needed a break for the world around them too.

After learning more about his 'best' friends, Theo finds himself questioning their intentions and if they care about him at all.

This book does a lot with navigating many different aspects of not only being a teen but being held by the expectations of society. 5 out of 5 stars for me.

Kiss and Don't Tell by Meghan Quinn

By now we are all probably well aware that sappy romances aren't usually my thing. But upon acquiring some anxiety about travel and leaving my cat at home for a few days I needed something to distract me on the plane and this definitely did that.

This book follows Winnie, who is stranded after her car ends up in a ditch on a dirt road in Banff, Canada. When looking for shelter in a downpour, she stumbles upon a cabin housing five hockey players during their summer break. A dream for most people. There she meets Pacey, who she is immediately drawn too.

As they hang out more, they start to realize they have a lot more in common than they thought, and some secrets they need to share. This book was cute, I finished it rather quick and it helped with anxiety. 3/5 stars.

New Adult by Timothy Janosky

New Adult follows Nolan Baker, a 23 year old working on his dream of being a comedian in NYC. After taking the chance of a lifetime on the same night as his sister's wedding, Nolan finds himself alone and wondering how to fix things.

He follows the instructions on a bag of crystal he got in a wedding gift, he wakes up 7 years in the future. He is in a fancy apartment, has a hot man in his bed, and is working on making a Netflix comedy special. But all his friends and family seemed to have blocked all of his communication. Now, Nolan is trying to figure out how to mend his lost relationships while also searching for a way to get those seven years back.

This book is scheduled to be published in August! 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood

This story follows Mallory, a former chess player who is working to support her family at an auto repair shop. When she is asked to play again by her best friend, in a tournament for charity.

After winning the tournament against the world's best player, Mallory is invited to join a team on a fellowship, that will offer her enough money to keep her family comfortable. The issue is she no longer likes chess and doesn't want to be apart of the world of it. Mallory then finds herself tangled in drama as she keeps winning, and has to ask herself if maybe she does love Chess after all.

This book was 5 out of 5 stars for me and is expected to be out in November!
