Welcome back to 'how many books can Maggie read in a month?'
The answer is many.
September has mix of reads on it. Fantasy mixed with romantic comedies as well as some post-apocalyptic monsters. As a lover of spooky season and fall, I wanted to find some 'light' spooky books to work into my September reads, (I am actually quite a baby when it comes to scary movies) and started to lean more into that near the end of the month. September also had some of my most anticipated reads grace shelves, and I'm excited to talk about those on here as well.

Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
As Iris Winnow tries to keep her family together, everything else seems to be falling apart. She losses her mother, and her potential 'big break' job in under a week. Determined to find her brother, she takes a job as a correspondent on the front lines, leaving the city and heading for the God's War.
At the same time, she has struck up conversations with a stranger, through two typewriters connected by magic. As she shares her stories and private thoughts with the stranger, she finds herself falling in love.
Roman Kitt is not only her biggest rival, but suddenly at the front lines with her. As the war between Gods continues around them, the two find themselves close to chaos they could not imagine. I loved this book, I will talk about this book forever. I'm upset the sequel isn't out yet and will be until it is out in December.
My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine
Cassie is...struggling to say the least. When an ad for a cheaper-than-believable apartment becomes available, she tries to find the fault in the owner, who would also be her roommate. Yes, the décor is outdated, but the view is perfect for her art and most importantly, the rent is cheap.
Her new roommate, Frederick, is mostly nocturnal, begging to not be woken up during the day, and they tend to never run into each other. He leaves her nice letters, buys things for the apartment she needs, and compliments her art. He overall seems like the perfect roommate, even if his taste comes from the Victorian Era.
That is until Cassie finds blood in the fridge, and learns a secret. Frederick is a vampire, and he needs her help to try to fit in during the modern world. I thought this book was really fun, I loved the contrast of having Frederick be asleep for 100 years, leaving him very much out of the loop in a large city.
You, with a View by Jessica Joyce

Noelle decides to post the letters and photos to TikTok, hoping to find the man in the photos and learn more about the story her grandma never her.
When she gets a response, she meets Paul, her grandma's first love, and his grandson Theo. Except, she knows Theo, her old high school rival who is thriving in the business world.
After finding out about Paul and Kat's planned honeymoon road trip, Noelle decides to do it, hoping to fall back in love with photography. When Paul, and Theo, join her, the adventure becomes something she could not have expected.
Desire or Defense by Leah Brunner
Mitch 'the machine' Anderson is the grumpy, introverted goon of the DC Eagles. After getting suspended for 15 games, he is told to fix his image, by filling in as assistant coach for a youth team. There, he meets a group of boys who are good at the game, but bullies to a teammate. Noah is rough around the edges, and reminds Mitch of himself.
Noah also has recently started living with his older sister, Andie, after they lost their parents. Andie is having a hard time keeping everything together, and sorted, after gaining custody of her younger brother. After storming onto the ice to yell at his new coach, Andie finds herself enamored with him.
This is a really adorable book, with closed door romance and a nice cleanse of the palate when reading other more intense books. Also, we love hockey in this house, so that is a big win for me.
Royal Blood by Aimee Carter
Evangeline is the illegitimate daughter of the King of England and after getting kicked out of several boarding schools she finds herself in palace where she is not wanted.
Now thrown into the royal world, filled with people who look down on her, Evan is just trying to make it to her 18th birthday so she can go back home to her mother in America.
That is until a party with her princess half-sister and friends ends in tragedy, leaving Evan the number one suspect in a murder. While trying to clear her own name, Evan suddenly finds herself digging into more royal scandals than she could have imagined. This book was a fun mystery that was a fun twist on the 'royal' stories we've seen in the past few years.
Dungeons and Drama by Kristy Boyce
Riley made a mistake, and in order to build back her parent's trust she is told to work at her father's game shop. While doing that, she meets a cast of nerdy guys who frequent the shop to play or just hang out.
That is where she meets Nathan, a boy who seems closer to her father than she is and is trying to impress a girl who won't give him the time of day. They decide to fake date, to help her get over an ex and to help him get the attention he is looking for.
But, as fake dating usually goes they start to develop feelings. Except Riley is looking for the musical light at the end of the tunnel and needs to end her punishment in order to make that dream happen. This book was a fluffy nerd romance, and I'm actually upset that the rest of you need to wait until Jan to read it. I absolutely adored it.
Hell Followed with Us by Andrew Joseph White
Benji, a trans teenager is on the run from the cult that made him into the monster he is destined to become. After spending years in a cult that does not accept him and becoming a monster of their creation, Benji and his dad escape...but they find them. After his dad's death, Benji finds safety with a group of LGBTQ+ teens, who survived the apocalypse in a youth center, and have been feeding for themselves since.
While trying to help hide the monster he has become, Benji helps the group at the ALC get the revenge they have always dreamed of on the cult that destroyed everything they knew.
This book is both terrifying and uncomfortable and mixed politics and religion and monsters. I absolutely adored it and am excited to read other books by this author.
Together We Rot by Skyla Arndt
Together We Rot is a young adult debut by Skyla Arndt that came out earlier this month. It is also another thriller/spooky book that centers around a cult.
Wil is still mourning the loss of her mother, even after the police insist she just 'ran away'. After spending the last year dealing with the loss and Wil is not ready to give up. After insisting her former-best friend, Elwood's family had something to do with it, Wil is now trying everything to find how his family was involved.
Elwood has always been a 'perfect' child, never crossing the line or breaking the rules. But as his 18th birthday approaches, he is scared what his dad has planned for him. When Elwood learns that his dad plans to sacrifice him to the forest, Elwood runs away, seeking help from the only person he knows he can trust, Wil. This book was amazing. A nice mix of dark and magic. I really enjoyed it.
