Every once and a while, a small break from staring at hundreds of words on a page is needed. One of my favorite ways around this is by reading graphic novels, which can range from being about superheroes we already know, to completely original stories with beautiful art to accompany it. I find graphic novels to be a relaxing way to keep reading and having stories in my life, while also being something easy and quick to read. (I'm definitely guilty of using them to fill my reading goals each year).
If you've never tried to read graphic novels, I highly recommend. I figured giving some options of different graphic novels to get you started would be helpful. So here are some of my favorite graphic novels I have read over the years.
The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang
This story follows Prince Sebastian, who is being told to find a wife by his parents. Prince Sebastian has a secret, at night he puts on lovely dresses and gown and goes around Paris as fashion icon Lady Crystallia.
His dresses are made for him by his best friend Frances, a small dressmaker who dreams of greatness; but in order to protect the Prince's secret she must not tell anyone she makes the dresses.
This graphic novel has really simple, but pretty artwork. The story really sucks you in, and the ending was very cute. I liked the design of the dresses, and the love shared between the two best friends who just wanted to help each other out.
Check Please! by Ngozi Ukazu
Bitty, is a world champion figure skater from Georgia who finds himself on the Samwell University Hockey Team. As he shows his life on the internet, and does his favorite hobby of stress baking, he is finding it hard to get used to college hockey.
There is checking, way bigger players and also, his attractive team captain Jack.
I love this story, and the sequel, a lot. There is hockey, there is romance, and the book features queer characters who are accepted not only at their school but into the NHL as well. (crazy).
I liked how supportive, and weird, the other team mates were and honestly the art is adorable.
Heartstopper Series by Alice Oseman
I've discussed this series a lot, and will probably continue to discuss this series a lot.
I adore the art, I adore the cast of characters and just the love the Nick and Charlie share.
Nick and Charlie spend the first book finding love and comfort in each other, as well as Nick figuring out himself. The rest of the series has good and sad moments, with Charlie suffering from bullying and an eating disorder.
They did just announce the 5th and 6th graphic novels in the series, with the 6th expected to be the last.
Also, its a Netflix show! Highly recommend that too.
Swamp Thing: Twin Branches by Maggie Stiefvater
One day, I will have a whole blog about books by Maggie Stiefvater, because she has so many and I love the magical realism within them.
Though Swamp Thing, is not her original idea (as it is a property of DC), the story is and one of my favorite things is that one of the twins is a Type 1 Diabetic.
I love the Diabetes rep, and the accuracy of it within the writing. One day I hope to see more of that in books/series.
I also really enjoyed the art within this graphic novel, which is half the battle when trying to read them.
Teen Titans: Raven by Kami Garcia
It is no secret to those who know me how much I love Teen Titans, both the animated and the new darker version on HBO.
There are now four graphic novels in this series, my favorite being the 3rd, and I love them all.
The first two books follow Raven and Beast Boy respectively, with them coming together in book 3. The 4th book has more of a focus on Robin.
The art in these novels, by Gabriel Picolo is really beautiful, I recommend looking at his instagram too where he does a lot of Titans and other nerdy related art!
Crumbs by Danie Stirling
This story is a book that are complied from comics on Webtoon. (I believe Heartstopper might be as well).
This story follows a young seer, who is struggling with her powers, but goes to the same cafe every day. This cafe has a selection of treats that have been hand-crafted to help you achieve your dreams.
At the cafe, she meets Laurie, who is working there with his aunt. He dreams of being a musician and the two grow close. As they start to fall in love, they also start to realize they have big dreams that they want to work with each other. A really cute story with pretty art.
There are definitely a ton more graphics novels I can mention, and many more I want to read!
